When it comes to single-phase AC motors, starting them up smoothly requires the use of capacitors. While most motors only require a starting capacitor, some motors are equipped with both a starting capacitor and a running capacitor. But what exactly is the difference between these two capacitors?
The starting capacitor is responsible for providing the initial torque needed to rotate the motor. It is connected to the starting coil and is disconnected automatically once the motor reaches about 75% of its rated speed. On the other hand, the running capacitor accompanies the motor throughout its operation, helping to create a phase difference between the starting and running windings. Additionally, the running capacitor balances the current between the main and secondary windings.
It's important to note that the starting capacitor requires a withstand voltage of 250V or more, as it works instantaneously for a short period of time. In contrast, the running capacitor requires a withstand voltage of 450V or more, as it operates continuously.
While the starting capacitor is essential for motor startup and must not be missing, the running capacitor can be unnecessary in certain cases. The running capacitor compensates for the motor's capacitance during operation, while the starting capacitor is only used during startup and then disconnected.
When it comes to capacity, the start capacitor is typically 2-5 times larger than the run capacitor. The start capacitor usually has a capacity of about 200 microfarads, while the run capacitor has a capacity of about 20-30 microfarads.
